If your website traffic dropped in 2026 and your rankings didn't change, Google AI Overviews are the most likely cause.
AI Overviews appeared on 48% of all Google searches as of March 2026, up from 31% a year earlier. The Pew Research Center found that click-through rates drop to around 8% when an AI summary is displayed, compared to 15% without one. Here is what happened, how to verify it's affecting your business, and what to do about it.
What actually changed
Google now answers many search queries directly at the top of the results page using an AI-generated summary. The user gets the answer without clicking. Your page may rank number one. You may still receive zero clicks.
Some sites ranked between 100 and 10,000 in visibility have lost 20% to 40% of their organic traffic without any change in their rankings at all. This affects informational queries most severely — "what is," "how to," "how much does," "best way to." These are exactly the queries that used to send buyers to service company websites.
Simultaneously, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode now route millions of searches that previously went to Google. Each platform synthesizes answers from multiple sources. If your business doesn't appear in those answers, you don't exist to that buyer.
ChatGPT referral traffic converts at roughly 15.9% against 1.76% for Google organic — about nine times higher — turning small visitor numbers into disproportionate revenue. How to check if this is affecting you
Open Google Search Console. Set a 12-month comparison (current year vs. the same period last year). Enable the Impressions, Clicks, CTR, and Average Position columns.
Look for this specific pattern: impressions holding or growing, clicks falling, CTR declining. This is the AI Overview signature. Your page is being shown in search results but not being clicked because the query is being answered above your listing.
If you see impressions falling and clicks falling together, that's a ranking problem — different issue, different fix.
If you see impressions stable and clicks dropping, that's AI Overviews.
Then open ChatGPT and Perplexity. Search for the queries your customers use to find businesses like yours. If your business doesn't appear in the first substantive answer, you're invisible to those buyers.
Why it's worse for service businesses
Product companies can rely on shopping results and brand searches. Service businesses depend on informational queries — "best [service] in [city]," "how to find [service type]," "what does [service] cost." These are exactly the queries AI Overviews hit hardest.
Roughly 80% of traffic drops investigated in 2026 trace back to one of two things: the site used to rank for informational queries now overtaken by AI Overviews, or pages haven't been updated in years and lack the recent information the topic requires. What actually works to fix it
1. Become a cited source, not just a ranking page
AI Overviews and ChatGPT cite sources. To be cited, your content needs to be structured the way AI engines read — direct answers in the first paragraph, FAQ sections with schema markup, specific factual claims with clear attribution. Generic well-written content doesn't get cited. Content written to answer a specific question directly does.
2. Update content on a regular cycle
AI Overviews favor content that is fresh. Pages that haven't been updated in over a year are losing citation eligibility to newer sources covering the same topic. The effective maintenance cycle for pages targeting AI citation is 13 weeks. Not necessarily a full rewrite — updating data, adding new examples, and refreshing statistics is sufficient.
3. Build authority signals outside your website
AI engines evaluate source authority using signals that go beyond your website. Reviews on third-party platforms, mentions in industry publications, citations from established sites in your category — all of these feed the authority signals that determine whether you get cited.
4. Schema markup for every page
FAQPage, WebPage with SpeakableSpecification, and Service schemas tell AI crawlers explicitly what your page is about and which sections are suitable for citation. Without this, your page competes for attention against pages that have explicitly structured their content for AI readability.
What the Visibility Intelligence Audit covers
Our Visibility Intelligence Audit is a fixed-price engagement ($2,500–$4,000) that covers:

- Whether your business appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode answers
- The specific structural issues preventing citation
- A prioritized action plan ordered by impact
Most audits take 5–7 business days and identify two or three specific, high-impact fixes. You can implement them yourself, or continue with us.
